My First Time Applying Abroad
The first time I wanted to pursue graduate studies, I had no idea how to approach the system. I just knew one thing: the program must be fully funded. So, I aimed for scholarships like the Commonwealth Scholarship in the UK.
I failed the first couple of interviews—mostly because I had no experience with how these conversations worked. When I later applied for the Fulbright Scholarship in the U.S., I went in with a defeated mindset, submitting a proposal based purely on my passion for African American literature.
I still remember rushing through Dhaka traffic with a colleague, arriving at the American Center just an hour before the deadline. Surprisingly, I got selected for an interview—and I nailed it, mostly because I spoke with genuine passion.
That experience was a turning point. It helped me understand how to apply for studies abroad and, most importantly, what really matters when choosing the right fit.
1. Define Your Academic and Career Goals
The first question to ask is: Why do you want to leave the comfort of your home and study abroad in English for multiple years?
Studying in English as a course is very different from studying everything in English. Be honest with yourself about your motivation.
Ask yourself:
- What are my academic interests?
- Do I want research, professional training, or skills development?
- What are my long-term goals—further study, employment, immigration? Clarity here will guide your entire application journey.
2. Compare Programs and Course Options
Start broad. Don’t rely on one “dream school.” Canadian universities, for example, are often multidisciplinary—give yourself options.
Don’t stop at program names. Instead:
- What are the core and elective courses?
- Is there a thesis, practicum, or capstone?
- How flexible is the curriculum? Example: A “Master’s in Education” could focus on leadership at one school and curriculum design at another.
3. Research Faculty, Supervision, and Research Areas
Whether undergrad or grad, know who teaches what. Faculty shape your academic and professional future.
Check:
- Do they research your area of interest?
- Are they actively publishing or leading projects?
- Do they support international students? Always email or meet with prospective programs to understand how they align with your goals.
4. Look Beyond University Rankings
It’s easy to get swayed by global rankings—but context matters more.
- Focus on departmental or program-specific rankings
- Consider regional reputation (especially for immigration/work plans)
- Research alumni outcomes A school ranked #10 for business might be stronger for you than a #1-ranked school in another field.
5. Review Tuition, Funding, and Cost of Living
Even fully funded programs may not cover all expenses. A holistic financial view is crucial.
Ask:
- What’s the tuition for international students?
- Are there scholarships or assistantships?
- What are the living costs (rent, food, transport)? Sometimes a lower-ranked but funded program is better than a high-cost “dream” option.
6. Think About Location, Culture, and Support
Once the initial excitement fades, culture shock is real. Know what kind of life you're stepping into.
Consider:
- City size and cost of living (e.g., Toronto vs. Halifax)
- Weather, transport, and accessibility
- Mental health, writing centres, student societies, and support services You’re not just picking a university. You’re choosing where you’ll live, grow, and build community.
7. Check Post-Graduation and Immigration Prospects
In Canada, post-study immigration is often a huge reason to apply. Provinces differ, so research accordingly.
Look into:
- Internships, co-ops, and career fairs
- PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) eligibility
- Industry connections and alumni networks Make sure your program supports your immigration and employment goals.
Final Checklist for Choosing the Right University
- Compare 3–5 programs side by side
- Create a checklist for academic, financial, and personal needs
- Reach out to faculty, alumni, or admissions offices
- Start early—especially if applying for scholarships or funding
