“The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) allows students who have graduated from eligible schools to gain valuable Canadian work experience.” IRCC
1. What the PGWP Is
- A work authorization for international graduates from eligible Canadian institutions.
- Valid for up to 3 years (length depends on program studied).
- Open work permit — allows work for any employer and is not job-specific.
- Crucial bridge from student status to Canadian workplace experience.
2. The Importance of Canadian Work Experience
- Work experience gained on PGWP strengthens PR applications through:
Express Entry (EE): Canadian work experience earns extra points (especially under Canadian Experience Class).
- Many PNP streams require or prioritize applicants with Canadian work experience.

3. Combining PGWP With Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
- PNPs are provincial immigration pathways that nominate candidates for PR based on local needs.
- Many provinces have PGWP-friendly streams that fast-track international graduates.

This stream is designed specifically for international graduates of Manitoba institutions.

⚠️ Not Currently Active or Cancelled
- British Columbia PNP International Graduate / International Post-Graduate streams — previously available for international graduates; discontinued or paused as of late 2024–2025 due to nomination allocation changes and delays.
- Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) — ended in late 2025; new Quebec system may still have pathways but PEQ no longer accepts new applications.
- **Ontario Master's/Doctoral stream is on pause **
🧠 Notes & Tips
✅ PGWP holders are eligible for most provincial international graduate streams that require a valid work permit and job offer. ✅ Some streams (e.g., Ontario Master’s & PhD) do not require job offers and are highly desirable for recent graduates. ✅ Always check current intake status and quotas directly on provincial government websites — some streams open/close based on nomination allocations.
Strategies for alignment
- Choose study programs tied to provincial labor needs (ex.: tech, healthcare, trades).
- After graduation, target PNP streams for international graduates (e.g., Ontario’s Masters Graduate Stream or British Columbia’s International Graduate categories).
- Use PGWP work experience to satisfy stream requirements (most require 1 year of skilled work).
- Apply for PNP nomination to secure 600 extra Express Entry points (effectively guaranteeing an ITA for PR).
