If you’re a university student, you’ve probably heard professors say: “Make a strong argument!” or “This paper lacks a clear argument.”
But what exactly is an argument in academic writing? As a specialist trained in university-level writing and rhetoric, I’m here to break it down—simply and clearly.
What an Argument Isn’t
Let’s start with what academic argument is not:
- It’s not a fight or a debate
- It’s not just your opinion
- It’s not a summary of what others have said An academic argument is your original claim, supported by evidence and critical thinking.
So, What Is an Academic Argument?
Think of it this way:
An argument is your main idea or position, clearly stated, and backed by reasoning, examples, and research.
It answers a “why” or “how” question, and it shows your thinking process—not just facts.
Examples:
- “Climate change literature helps us rethink global justice.”
- “Social media doesn’t just reflect identity; it shapes it.”
- “The absence of women’s voices in war narratives limits how we understand history.”
What Makes a Good Argument?
Clear: Your reader knows what you’re trying to say Focused: You don’t try to say everything Debatable: It’s not obvious or a fact everyone agrees on Supported: You use quotes, data, or real-life examples Organized: Every paragraph builds on your claim
Tips from a Writing Instructor
As someone who teaches academic writing, I always tell my students:
- Start with a question, not a statement
- Draft a rough thesis, then revise it as your ideas grow
- Ask yourself: Would someone disagree with me?
- Use transitions like “however,” “for example,” or “this suggests” to guide the reader
Why This Matters
Strong arguments show your voice. They prove that you’re not just repeating what you’ve read—you’re thinking critically and joining the conversation in your field.
